It’s never a nice situation, but occasionally serious or ongoing poor behaviour in the workplace can warrant a referral to a professional for assessment and counselling.
A performance related referral involves a manager or supervisor formally referring a staff member for counselling or psychological assessment following a specific and identifiable behavioural issue that has been adversely affecting workplace productivity or safety.
This action is not taken lightly and can occur as a result of intoxication at work, inappropriate language towards others, aggression, violence, disobeying safety regulations or substantiated drug use impacting on workplace productivity or safety. The first step involves notifying the staff member that they have been formally referred for counselling and that the Converge International psychologist will be required to submit a written report to the manager outlining the findings and recommendations. The psychologists will also discuss the staff member’s behavioural history before determining the number of counselling sessions required.
In many cases this proactive and constructive support can lead to significantly improved behavior to the benefit of the employee and business. Having an objective and professional assessment of the situation, enables those involved to take positive, practical action to resolve the issues.
