Have you seen the latest mental health stats?


The Australian Institute Of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released its latest report Mental Health Services in Australia. Here’s a quick overview of the findings:

Prevalence of mental health

  • 4 million Australians were estimated to have experienced a common mental condition in 2015

  • 2.2 million people accessed Medicare-subsidised mental health services in 2015

Costs of mental health services

  • $9 billion, or $373 per person, was spent on mental health-related services in Australia during 2015 – 2016, a real increase from $354 per person in 2011 – 2012

  • 7.7% of government health expenditure was spent on mental health-related services in 2015 – 2016

  • $1.2 billion, or $49 per person, was spent by the Australian Government on benefits for Medicare-subsidised mental health-specific services in 2016–17

The figures above highlight the impact of mental health in our community; this also means people in your workplace may be facing mental health challenges.
